The Go Giver | Book Review
May 09, 2022The Go Giver: A Little Story About A Powerful Business Idea
By Bob Burg and John David Mann.
OVERVIEW
This book is a modern day parable, a much needed reminder in today’s overly commercialised world that we need to go further than transactional relationships. It’s a nice easy read - you can knock it over in an afternoon.
The book follows an ambitious salesman Joe, as his week takes an unexpected turn on his way to achieve his goals. Along the way he meets new people and learns insightful and meaningful life lessons that have a significant impact on his outlook.
FAVOURITE INSIGHTS
-
The Five Laws of Stratospheric Success:
-
The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than take in payment
-
The Law of Compensation: Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them
-
The Law of Influence: Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first
-
The Law of Authenticity: The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself
-
The Law of Receptivity: The key to effective giving is staying open to receiving

Expand your thinking about the reason that you work - using the motto of Survive, Save and Serve. This quote explains it nicely: “Survive—to meet your basic living needs. Save—to go beyond your basic needs and expand your life. And serve—to make a contribution to the world around you.” Most of us focus on the first - surviving, a few focus on the second, to save but those who are successful not just financially but in all aspects of their life focus on the third. How does their job add value and make the world a better place. A question for everyone to ask themselves.
-
Create a network around you. A network of “people who know you, like you and trust you.” People who want to see you succeed, and have you at the top of their mind when it comes to advocating for you.
FAVOURITE QUOTE
A large portion of the book is devoted to shaking us to our core and reminding us to focus less on ourselves and more on those around us, the impact and value that we have for the world. This quote also describes the Third Law.
